Uncle Sherlock Holmes said he was "exceedingly preoccupied" with That Little Affair of the Vatican Cameos when the passing of the Soul of Sir Charles Baskerville shook Dr. James Mortimer to the bones and took him to London to whisper those words that, even today, send a shudder through a body: "Mr. Holmes, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound!"
From that bleak and gray granite-laden moor; amid purple hills and dales perfumed by lavender heather in Devon County, South West England, came Dr. Mortimer to London with the haunting story of "...Sir Charles Baskerville, whose sudden and tragic death some three months ago created so much excitement in Devonshire."
Dr. Mortimer read to Uncle Sherlock and Dr. Watson a newspaper article from: "...the Devon County Chronicle of May 14th of this year. It is a short account of the facts elicited at the death of Sir Charles Baskerville which occurred a few days before that date."
Uncle Sherlock had read little about the death, he was apologetic: "...I had observed some newspaper comment at the time, but I was exceedingly preoccupied by that little affair of the Vatican cameos, and in my anxiety to oblige the Pope I lost touch with several interesting English cases."
To Baskerville Hall he sent Dr. Watson on ahead of him, Uncle Sherlock said he could not leave London right then: "At the present instant one of the most revered names in England is being besmirched by a blackmailer, and only I can stop a disastrous scandal. You will see how impossible it is for me to go to Dartmoor."
A ruse! Uncle Sherlock would later admit to Dr. Watson. A good student of Sherlock Holmes knows Uncle Sherlock would never have divulge such intelligence like that in a million years; look how he always kept Dr. Watson in the dark. Uncle Sherlock wanted to secretly study the case from the moor; Dr. Watson's one set of eyes was enough in Baskerville Hall.
By saying that in "that little affair," Uncle Sherlock knew Dr. Mortimer had read of the affair. It was the laugh of England, the Fleet Street newspapers had a hay day with it. By saying little in "that little affair," Uncle Sherlock expressed sarcasm and distain towards the Fleet Street journalists for their disregard of the human lives they hurt; and would have hurt in this affair, if it hadn't been for Uncle Sherlock feeding the newspapers the same kind of garbage they feed the public. Thus, Fleet Street had long forgotten the story and put it to rest. Only Uncle Sherlock knew the real story was not over. He instructed that the real story could not see the light of day for 100 years, and then, it could only be revealed by a direct descendant with similar God-given talents. I am that descendant, it's all explained here:

Pope Leo XIII (r.1878-1903) hired Uncle Sherlock at a great price because of the affair's urgency and import, and potentially dire consequences. Her Majesty Queen Victoria was being blackmailed over three precious diamond cameos presented to her by Pope Leo XIII. Look at any portrait of Queen Victoria, she may be wearing a cameo. She loved cameos, her love for cameos popularized them, she gave cameos as royal gifts.
The blackmailer claimed he could prove Queen Victoria was Roman Catholic! Fleet Street knew of the blackmailer's claim, Fleet Street knew the Pope hired Sherlock Holmes, but Fleet Street never dug up what Uncle Sherlock discovered about Queen Victoria's son Bertie. Uncle Sherlock grew even more devoted to his honorable Queen when he saw how she took upon herself the Fleet Street derision and ridicule in order to secretly shield her son Bertie, the future King Edward VII.
Queen Victoria's son Prince Albert Edward, nicknamed Bertie, secretly converted to Roman Catholicism for the love of a woman: his bride-to-be Princess Alexandra of Denmark, with whom he would father six children. When Queen Victoria died in 1901, her son Bertie ascended to the throne as King Edward VII. After a reign of only nine years, he died in 1910 and was succeeded by his son, King George V, who upon death was succeeded by his son, King Edward VIII, who abdicated for the love of a woman. Or was it for the love of God and the Roman Catholic Church? Was King Edward VIII secretly Roman Catholic, like his grandfather King Edward VII? Was his father King George V secretly Roman Catholic? Did King Edward VIII keep it secret to honor the legacy and history of his father King George V, grandfather King Edward VII and great-grandmother Queen Victoria?
Uncle Sherlock's notes in The Sherlock Holmes Archives that deal with That Little Affair of the Vatican Cameos only show King Edward VII and his wife were secretly Roman Catholic. Did they baptize their six children, one being the future King George V, into the Roman Catholic Church, as all good Catholic parents do? If so, did King George V baptize his children, one being the future Edward VIII, into the Roman Catholic Church, as all good Catholic parents do?
(To be continued when I have time to use Uncle Sherlock's notes to finish the
adventure...)
