Heifers are eligible for registration and guaranteed to be open. The American Angus Association listed 20 Gannon Angus cows in the American Angus Association's 1999 Pathfinder Report. Gannon Angus are docile to work, fast fleshing, functional, economical and bred lean with just the right amount of tasty marbeling for today’s kitchen and restaurant table. In the early 1990s, when Monfort had a slaughterhouse in Des Moines, a semi-truckload of Gannon Angus was sold to Monfort, and Monfort sold that Gannon Angus beef to McDonald's Restaurants. Also during the early 1990s, a leading meat packer in Japan had an office in Des Moines that purchased a semi-truckload of Gannon Angus each year for several years; the cattle were ready to be slaughtered for the U.S. market, but the Japanese put the cattle in a contract feedlot and fed them until they weighed 300-400 lbs. over U.S. market weight, thus giving the meat the marbling desired in Japan. The cattle were butchered and the carcusses flown to Japan by air. That's Gannon Black Angus Beef for you. The same Japan group purchased heifers from Gannon Angus for thier farm in Missouri. Gannon Farm has been in the Purebred Registered Black Angus business for over 65 years; the Gannon Angus herd is one of the oldest and largest Registered Purebred Angus herds in Central Iowa. Gannon Angus was started in the 5th Gannon generation, by the famous John J. Gannon, famous for his Angus, work ethic and having 14 children with his wife Helen: 7 daughters and 7 sons. Family tradition has it that once when John Gannon took an Angus bull to sale, the auctioneer cried out, "This Angus bull is own by John Gannon, sire of 14 kids." A farmer in the crowd yelled back, "To hell with the bull, bring out John Gannon!"
