In 1973, when I was a 19 year old kid, I joined the Peace Corps and went to work in the south of fierce backward Afghanistan before the war for 6 months. Then I went to work with the poorest, gentlest and most gracious people in the world, in the African bush of my beautiful Mali, French West Africa for 2 1/2 years, without coming home to set my eyes on my dear ol' Mammy and mean ol' Pa, good old Gannon Farm, with its 1,100 acres, my family of 7 sisters and 7 brothers (I'm Lucky #7), our gentle Guernsey milk cows, stately Angus beef cows and funny pigs, settled in 1863 during the Civil War by my great-great-great grandparents, brought to the Louisiana Purchase by hunger and poverty off their farm in SE Ireland, during the tragic potato famine. Glorious how God used the little potato, found in the New World, to bring so many Irish and their descendants to a better life in the New World, purchased with suffering of great price by millions. Every Soul in Heaven wishes they would have suffered more, so others can suffer less.
